North American grocery delivery marketplace and technology provider that lets shoppers order from local grocers, fulfilled by personal shoppers, and sells e-commerce tools to retailers.
Instacart does not own stores or inventory: it partners with existing grocers and retailers, earning fees from consumers and retailers on each order plus Instacart+ membership income. A large and growing share comes from advertising sold to consumer brands, and from enterprise software such as white label storefronts, fulfillment tools and smart carts. Categories are mainly grocery, plus pharmacy, pets, alcohol, convenience and general retail.
In 2025 Instacart handled 338.8 million orders worth about 37.2 billion US dollars in gross transaction value, with revenue of about 3.74 billion US dollars, of which about 1.07 billion came from advertising and other.
What they did, why it worked, and how you can run the same move in one city on a small budget.

What they did
Instead of building warehouses, Instacart put existing grocery chains and local stores online and sent shoppers to pick orders in those stores. Customers keep buying from the banners they know, now delivered.
Why it worked
It scaled fast with almost no inventory risk and gave retailers an online channel without building one themselves.
Copy it locally
Sign the two or three best loved grocers, butchers or markets in your city and list their catalogs in one app. Use your own pickers or let store staff pick, and charge a delivery fee instead of holding stock.
Instacart launched Express in 2013, a paid membership with unlimited free delivery that later became Instacart+.
Why it worked
Grocery is a weekly habit, so a flat fee that removes delivery costs makes the app the default choice for every top up shop.
Copy it locally
Sell a simple monthly plan with free delivery above a minimum basket for families who order every week. Make the terms and renewal date very clear so customers trust it.
Instacart bundled its retailer tools into Instacart Platform in 2022 and kept adding to it, including Caper smart carts acquired in 2021 and Instaleap fulfillment software acquired in 2026.
Why it worked
Retailers that run their own branded store and fulfillment on Instacart software are tied in more deeply than marketplace sellers alone.
Copy it locally
Offer each grocer on your marketplace its own branded ordering site and picking tools on top of the shared app. Grocers get a direct channel, and you become hard to replace.
Instacart sells sponsored placements to consumer brands inside the shopping app and licenses its Carrot Ads technology to other retailers' sites. Advertising and other revenue topped 1 billion US dollars in 2025.
Why it worked
Brands pay to reach shoppers at the moment they choose products, which adds high margin income on top of delivery fees.
Copy it locally
Sell featured spots, banners and promo slots in your app to local distributors and beverage or snack brands. Even a few monthly sponsors can cover marketing costs.
Every giant has blind spots. These are the ones a focused local operator can turn into an advantage.
Fee transparency complaints
In December 2025 Instacart agreed to pay 60 million US dollars in refunds to settle FTC claims that it advertised free delivery while charging service fees and did not clearly disclose that free trials turned into paid memberships. Instacart denied wrongdoing.
A December 2025 study by Consumer Reports and Groundwork Collaborative reported that shoppers saw different prices for the same item at the same store, with gaps of up to 23 percent. Instacart said the tests ran with a small number of retailers and ended all item price tests.
Instacart describes its consumer service as covering the United States and Canada. Grocers and delivery operators in other countries have no Instacart marketplace competing for their local shoppers.
Import each partner grocer's stores, categories and products in bulk so their catalogs go live in one app fast, as in Instacart's partner with grocers you already trust move.
Weight-based pricing
Sell produce, meat and deli items priced by weight from butchers and markets, so the grocers you sign in Instacart's partner with grocers you already trust move can list their real catalog.
Loyalty levels
Reward families who shop every week with loyalty tiers, a loyalty version of Instacart's membership for unlimited free delivery move that keeps your app their default.
Store websites
Give each grocer on your marketplace its own branded ordering website on a custom domain, the local take on Instacart's become the retailer's technology partner move.
Ad banners
Sell promotional banners in your app to local distributors and beverage or snack brands, copying Instacart's turn traffic into advertising revenue move.
Featured products
Pin a sponsoring brand's products to the top of the list as a paid promo slot, another way to run Instacart's turn traffic into advertising revenue move.
