Connect the table, the order, and the team preparing it.
Give dine-in guests a clear way to browse and order while your team follows the same order through preparation. Compare QR table ordering, a guest-facing device, and staff-assisted entry before choosing a tabletop ordering system.
From a table identifier to a prepared order
- 1Open the right dine-in contextA store QR code can include the table number. Test that a scan opens the correct business and order type so the team knows where the order originated.
- 2Review the menu and place the orderThe guest selects products and configured options, then follows the chosen checkout flow. For staff-assisted order taking, demonstrate the supported entry surface and its permissions separately.
- 3Receive the order and prepare itThe restaurant follows incoming orders in its merchant tools. Confirm how preparation instructions and table details reach the team; review printer, KDS, or POS connections for your actual setup.
- 4Serve, reconcile, and resolve changesAssign who brings the order to the table, handles a mistaken table number, and reconciles payment or an allowed change. Test duplicate submissions and failed payments as well as a completed meal.
Choose who operates the device
A restaurant order-taking tablet is a device choice; a waiter app is a staff workflow. Neither should be confused with the guest’s QR ordering journey.
Explore QR code ordering- Guest QR or tabletop self-service
- QR ordering opens the store menu on a phone without an app download. A fixed guest-facing tablet or kiosk needs its own screen, reset, payment, power, and device-management review.
- Staff-assisted orders
- Show how an employee enters an order using the chosen supported ordering surface, how the table is identified, and what the employee can edit. Do not assume a dedicated waiter product, seat-level split checks, or offline card payment.
Define the kitchen and payment handoffs
The useful comparison between table-ordering systems is what happens after the guest taps to order. A visible menu alone does not prove the kitchen received the order.
- Preparation ownership
- Agree which screen or connected system receives the order, who accepts it, how modifiers appear, and how the team detects an order that did not arrive. Review each proposed POS, printer, or KDS connection.
- Payment and changes
- Choose supported payment methods and decide whether payment happens in the customer flow or through another agreed procedure. Confirm how staff handle declined payments, cancellations, refunds, and changes the restaurant allows.
Keep reservations separate from table orders
A reservation books a visit; a table order records what the guest wants to buy. If both matter, walk through each journey and their handoff instead of assuming they are the same product.
- Pilot before buying hardware
- Run a real configured menu on the selected phone or tablet. Test readability, touch targets, table context, payment, and preparation handoff. Confirm device and payment-provider compatibility before procurement.
- Scope the rollout
- List store configuration, staff permissions, kitchen connections, devices, training, and support. If custom screens are needed, the included open-source frontend can be adapted while Ordering.co manages backend and API by default.
Questions to scope your operation
Is this a waiter app?
This page helps you evaluate table ordering and staff-assisted entry. Ask for a demonstration of the staff surface and permissions you intend to use; do not assume a separate waiter product is included.
Can a QR code identify the table?
Yes. For dine-in QR codes, you can enter a table number when generating the code. Test the order view and the staff handoff with your actual table configuration.
Does tabletop ordering require a tablet at every table?
No. QR ordering can use the guest’s phone. A shared or fixed tablet introduces device, payment, and reset requirements that should be reviewed separately.
Does a table reservation already include ordering?
Reservation and ordering are different journeys. Review table reservations and any order-ahead workflow separately from a customer ordering while seated.
