Let customers pay the way they already do.
Accept cards, digital wallets, PayPal, local payment methods, and cash or card on delivery through Stripe or one of more than 50 payment gateways. Then decide which methods each store offers on each channel and order type.
Payment methods
What you can do
One-screen checkout
Customers review their details, the order, the payment method, and the total on one checkout screen before they place the order.
Cards, saved or one-time
Accept credit and debit cards online. Customers can save a card to pay faster next time, or pay once without saving it.
Apple Pay and Google Pay
Wallet payments processed through Stripe, shown when the customer’s device and browser support them.
PayPal
Customers pay with their PayPal account, set up with your own PayPal business account.
Local payment methods
Offer redirect-based methods that Stripe supports in the customer’s country, such as Bancontact and Alipay.
Cash and card on delivery
Accept cash or card when the order is delivered or picked up, without an online gateway.
Methods by channel and order type
Each store chooses which payment methods appear for each order type and ordering channel.
Multi-store checkout
In a marketplace, customers buy from several stores in one checkout, and each store keeps its own order.
Split payments
Split each payment between the platform and the store automatically with Stripe Connect.
Website and customer apps
A checkout that fits on one screen.
Checkout brings the customer’s details, the order summary, the payment method, and the order total together, so customers can check everything before they place the order.
- On desktop, customer details and the order summary sit on one side, and payment, totals, and Place Order on the other
- On mobile, the same content runs in one vertical flow, with the final action near the bottom
- The bill shows the subtotal, discounts, taxes and fees, delivery charges, driver tip, and order total
- Place Order stays unavailable until the order has everything it needs, with a warning that says what is missing
- When nothing is left to pay, checkout shows that no payment is needed for the order
- Checkout rechecks the cart when the order is placed, so availability, offers, and totals are current
Website, customer apps, and kiosk
Cards, wallets, and PayPal online.
Accept online payments through Stripe, PayPal, or one of more than 50 payment gateways. Each gateway is set up with your own account, so incoming payments go to the account you choose.
- Stripe saves the customer’s card for a faster checkout on a later order; Stripe Direct takes a one-time payment without saving the card
- Saved cards stay in the customer’s Wallet, ready to choose in one click
- Apple Pay and Google Pay, processed through Stripe, appear when the customer’s device and browser support them
- PayPal connects with your PayPal client ID and secret, with a sandbox mode for testing
- Stripe Redirect sends customers through a redirect flow for local methods available in their country, such as Bancontact and Alipay
- Stripe Checkout sends customers to a Stripe-hosted payment page, set up business by business, with the methods each business enables in its own Stripe account
- Choose the currency customers are charged in, and test with Stripe’s test mode before you go live
- Customers can also pay with wallet cash where a store enables it, including a gift card balance redeemed online
Website, customer apps, and call center
Cash or card when the order arrives.
Stores can let customers pay in person when the order is delivered or picked up. These options need no online gateway.
- Turn on Cash on Delivery and Card on Delivery in a store’s Payment methods
- Customers paying cash can enter the amount they will pay with when they don’t have the exact amount
- Card on delivery is a card payment taken in person, separate from paying online
- Offer them only where they fit, for example cash only for delivery orders on your website
- Add a customer fee to cash orders if handling cash has a cost for your operation
Dashboard
Choose where each method appears.
Each store sets its own payment methods by order type and ordering channel, so every checkout shows only the methods that store accepts there.
- Turn each method on or off for a store in Stores > Payment methods
- Limit a method to certain order types, such as cash only for delivery
- Limit a method to certain channels, such as cards on your ordering app for every order type
- Configure a gateway once, then enable it store by store
- Call center agents can send a Stripe payment link to the customer’s phone by SMS or WhatsApp
- Choose which extra card fields are shown or required on each site
Marketplace website and app
One checkout across several stores.
In a marketplace, customers fill carts from several stores and pay for them in one checkout, while each store receives its own order.
- A grouped cart shows each store’s amount and the total for all carts
- Customer details, the address, and the payment method list are shared across the group
- Set a delivery time for each order
- Save orders as templates to order again later
- Split the payment across cards
- Show delivery fees and driver tips as one combined amount or per store
- Choose one coupon field per store or a shared one, and whether each store keeps its own checkout button
Dashboard
Split every payment with Stripe Connect.
Stripe Connect splits each customer payment between the platform and the store that fulfilled the order. Each store connects its own Stripe account and sees its payments and payouts in Stripe.
- Each store connects its Stripe account from Payment methods with Connect With Stripe
- Set the platform’s share as a percentage or a fixed fee
- By default, the platform percentage applies to the product subtotal, and taxes, the delivery fee, and the driver tip go to the store
- Driver payment splits are available
- Set up recurring payments, refund a payment, and view transaction history from the Stripe Connect settings
- Payouts follow each Stripe account’s payout settings and Stripe’s schedule
How it works
From setup to the next order.
- 01Connect a payment gateway
Enter the credentials from Stripe, PayPal, or another gateway in the Dashboard, with test mode on.
- 02Turn on methods for each store
In each store’s Payment methods, enable the methods it accepts and the order types and channels for each one.
- 03Test, then go live
Place test orders with the provider’s test values, then switch to live mode.
Good to know
- The methods a customer sees depend on the store, order type, channel, and device. Apple Pay and Google Pay appear only on supported devices and browsers.
- Each payment provider verifies your account and sets its own processing fees, supported countries and currencies, and payout schedule.
- Your team collects cash and card on delivery in person, so set your own steps for collecting and reconciling those payments.
