Restaurant staff scheduling: connect shift coverage with ordering capacity

Compare 7shifts and Sling by staff limits, permissions, costs and POS data, then align employee coverage with store hours and ordering capacity.

Keep three schedules separate

An employee schedule assigns people to roles and shifts. Store hours determine when the business offers service. Driver availability determines when delivery resources can accept work. Publishing one does not update the other two automatically.

A restaurant can be open with too little kitchen or packing coverage to fulfill the promised pickup time. Plan coverage from preparation and handoff workload, then align ordering availability with the capacity the manager can actually operate.

Compare free scheduling options and upgrade triggers

For a small team, compare employee availability, time-off requests, open shifts, swap approval, manager permissions, publishing and notifications. Test a shift someone cannot cover and check who can approve its replacement. A free roster is useful only if the team can keep it current.

7shifts: its plan requirements list Comp at 15 employees and one location; Essentials lists 30 employees. Its pricing page offers a free starting path. Confirm the selected plan’s current price, billing period, country and included tools before budgeting; do not substitute older plan names or rates.

Sling: the official pricing page lists free scheduling for up to 30 users, with time-off requests and available shifts. Paid capabilities and Toast customer offers need their own comparison. The page directs Toast customers to Toast Shop; a free scheduling account does not establish that the POS connection or a payroll package is free.

Treat time clocking, labor-cost calculations, payroll, advanced permissions and multiple locations as separate upgrade questions. Compare cost per location against cost per user using your full roster, not just the employees working today.

What the 7shifts–Toast integration actually connects

The 7shifts Toast guide, checked October 21, 2026, describes sales, time-clock and wage data synchronization. It lists Toast integration access at $50 per month per location; confirm currency, taxes and contract terms. Hourly wage sync excludes salaried positions. Schedule enforcement requires configuration and does not enforce the role used to clock in.

The Comp integration guidance distinguishes supported POS connections from time-card integrations requiring Essentials and POS schedule enforcement or payroll integrations requiring Pro. Budget the workforce subscription and applicable POS access separately.

Sales and punches are operational data; a published schedule is another event with different ownership. Before enabling a connector, map store, employee and role identifiers; define refresh timing, historical backfill, changed shifts and failed-sync handling. Demonstrate those events with your actual account configuration.

Toast’s Sling path is another option to evaluate

Toast’s Scheduling in Toast Web guide describes the Scheduling surface alongside Sling and a connection for POS clock-ins. Compare it with a separate 7shifts setup on the exact needs: staff availability, manager approvals, shift coverage, clocking, reports and the purchased package.

Get the current recurring total for scheduling, POS integration access, payroll if needed and onboarding. Where a provider has not supplied a usable rate, leave that item unquoted. Add taxes, seasonal roster growth and implementation effort before comparing totals.

Turn demand into a coverage decision

Group orders by short service intervals and role: preparation, packing, counter and delivery handoff. Look at item complexity and promised times alongside order count. Use previous comparable services and known events, then let the manager approve the required coverage.

Pilot a normal day and a busy service. Compare scheduled versus worked hours, unfilled roles, late orders and kitchen backlog. Define who adjusts ordering hours or service availability when staff call out, rather than assuming a labor connector will throttle orders.

Ordering.co supports restaurant ordering operations, while its driver schedule windows concern driver activation. Evaluate employee scheduling and payroll in the workforce tool; no Ordering.co–7shifts connection is established by the Toast integration. Use the restaurant software guide to map owners, and book a demo with your staffing constraints and busiest ordering interval.

See it running on your own menu.

The shortest way to understand any of this is to watch an order go from a storefront to a store to a driver, on your locations.
