Three different B2B decisions
A B2B marketplace connects business buyers with multiple suppliers. A supplier portal sells one company’s catalog to its customers. Both can accept business orders, but only the marketplace must coordinate separate sellers, their catalogs and commercial responsibilities.
Start with your role: buying stock, finding wholesale customers, or operating the platform. Joining an established network can help discovery; building a channel makes you responsible for acquisition, supplier onboarding and fulfillment. Neither decision guarantees demand.
Examples by category and geography
Faire: its brand offering connects wholesale brands with independent retailers across categories such as apparel, beauty, food and home. It is relevant to resale assortment, rather than a restaurant’s same-day delivery queue. Confirm supported seller and buyer countries before planning cross-border supply.
Amazon Business: business procurement is a different buying job from stocking a boutique. Evaluate the local marketplace’s assortment, purchasing controls, invoices and delivery coverage for your organization. Its official buying-tools guide describes purchasing administration and credit options; availability depends on the account and market.
JOOR: the fashion wholesale platform supports brand-retailer relationships, digital showrooms and wholesale orders. Seasonal collections, size ranges and buying appointments call for a different evaluation from ready-to-eat local commerce.
Ankorstore: an alternative for independent retail sourcing in Europe. Its retailer eligibility guide explains the resale business profile. Check country eligibility and supplier shipping conditions for your own store.
For industrial parts or chemicals, add specification matching, traceability documents, handling requirements and negotiated fulfillment to the shortlist. A broad retail catalog alone does not demonstrate suitability for those workflows.
Compare costs and net-60 terms correctly
For sellers, compare marketplace commissions, payment-processing costs, payout timing, returns, shipping and customer-acquisition expense. Faire distinguishes orders sourced through its marketplace from orders a brand brings through Faire Direct; zero commission on the latter does not establish zero total cost.
For buyers, compare minimum order quantities, freight, duties, returns and payment dates. Faire’s payment guide says eligible, approved retailers choosing Net 60 have 60 days after placing an order to pay. It is not automatic credit for every buyer. Amazon’s buying-tools guide describes credit-approved invoice terms and extensions tied to Business Prime; confirm the current country and account offer instead of assuming every B2B marketplace offers net-60.
For an owned channel, budget software, onboarding, integrations, support, acquisition and any credit risk you retain. An unavailable fee is unknown, not free.
When an owned B2B channel fits
An existing marketplace is useful when supplier discovery or a new retail audience is the immediate need. A supplier portal fits repeat ordering from one distributor. A multi-seller channel becomes worth evaluating when your business can recruit suppliers and buyers and define a shared service promise.
For local commerce, map store selection, product availability, order acceptance, payment and delivery first. Ordering.co supports branded ordering experiences and marketplace operations; specialized wholesale credit, procurement approvals and industrial requirements need their own scope discussion. The multi-vendor platform guide helps compare the operating foundation.
